Three Probable Teams in IPL-2022 for Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin had previously played for Chennai Super Kings, Kings XI Punjab & Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.

It’s once again that time of the year when the IPL auctions have come knocking at our doors. Every one of us know how important this auction is going to be as it is speculated to be the last mega-auctions providing teams a last chance to rebrand themselves. Keeping this in mind it becomes very important for us to understand that which player would be suited to which franchise based on their bowling/batting traits. One such player we are looking at today is Ravichandran Ashwin and top 3 franchises that may target him big this IPL as he is not retained by Delhi Capitals anymore.

Ashwin & his neglected T-20 Records:

R Ashwin is a seasoned off-spinner for India who has again asserted his authority as one of the world’s finest spinners in 2021. Apart from his wizardry with the ball, Ashwin also made invaluable contributions with the bat for which he has become one of the nominees for ICC test cricketer of the year. Coming to white ball cricket and especially IPL Ashwin has proved his mettle there as well. The last 3 seasons at Delhi Capitals have been quite impressive for him. In the previous IPL, he also became the third Indian spinner to pick 250 wickets in T-20 cricket.

The 34-year-old had approximately 140 wickets to his name in the recent IPL career while he bagged 52 wickets for India in 46 T20Is. The rest of his wickets came in the domestic circuit. He is the sixth-highest wicket-taker in the IPL.

So, one thing is for sure R Ashwin will be a valuable pick for any team keeping in mind the lethal bowler he is in the sub-continent, his ability to contribute with the bat and the witty cricketing brain that would be handy to any team for making good cricketing decisions on and off the field.

After an action-packed players retention event before the IPL mega auction for the 15th season in 2022, the action now shifts towards the to-be debutant franchises of the thriving tournament- Lucknow and Ahmedabad.

Let’s have look at the batters and their strike rate vs runs off bat against Ashwin over the years in IPL:

The graphic of Ashwin tells how cunning a bowler he is.

As per the latest update, the two new franchises are supposed to draft in a total of 3 players (2 Indians, and 1 overseas) sooner and submit their drafts to BCCI before the advent of mega-auctions.  The existing franchises have also started with their respective brainstorming activity- to form the best possible squad around the core of retained players within the purse limit not exceeding the limit of INR 90 Crore.

Coming back in Abu-den of Chennai Super Kings:

As per a recent report, the Chennai Super Kings think-tank have laid their eyes on experienced Indian mainstay all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin as target and will most likely aim at him during IPL 2022 mega auction. Ashwin was a crucial part of the previous franchise- Delhi Capitals for the past three seasons to promote than to the playoffs but failed to get retained in for the 2022 Auction. Ashwin has been in top-notch form off-late and has, on the back of some good performances in the IPL for the Capitals, earned his place back in the Indian T20I side after a 4-year wait.

He has played under MS Dhoni in the CSK previously as well, and is huge name in Tamil Nadu Cricket in particular. By taking into consideration that they have already retained a right-arm off break and pinch hitter in Moen will they go for Ashwin or not! And I believe the answer can be yes! Ashwin at Chepauk is dangerous any day. He any which way has played his most cricket down there at Tamil Nadu and will be valuable to the team yellow always. Another factor is he being an Indian building the playing 11 will be relatively easier and the team gets a flexibility to choose their 4 overseas at ease.

Last but not the least, after the possible departure of MSD after 2022, the presence of an Indian senior like him in the team will always be helpful  for the young guns a big-time.

Rajasthan Royals can look for a cunning campaigner:

Given that Ashwin has returned to India’s T20I set-up after being picked for the T20 World Cup followed by the New Zealand series at home, franchises would want him in their team for his phenomenal economy rate of 6.91 in IPL.

Ashwin can bring his vast experience for the Royals to revive their bowling department in the middle overs and could also be an advisor to Samson in making core decisions, not to forget his fabulous record in Rajasthan . Any which way RR do lack a good spinner to hold together the middle overs and an experience head  to guide the bowlers as well as young captain Samson and who better than Ashwin can fulfil that role! So, them going for Ravi shouldn’t be surprising at all.

Lastly, we come to the two new entries Lucknow and Ahmedabad who are building their team from scratch.

New Franchise of Lucknow/Ahmedabad:

As these two teams are starting from zero the first thing, they would be aiming at will be a player who is a captain material and we all know how Ashwin with his witty brain and vast experience fits in the role perfectly. Ash in past has already captained Punjab so probably he would enjoy the captaincy role for any of the newer teams once again.

But at the end what does the Indian spinner say? Where does he wish to go? “CSK is a franchise close to my heart, for me, CSK is like a school.” Well recently he spoke at length about csk at his YouTube channel: “ That is where I joined Pre KG, LKG, UKG, primary school, then I did my middle school, and then starting high school and completing 10th standard board exams, I moved to a different school.” He kept on saying, “ I did my 11th and 12th a couple of, a couple of years, outside. Then I did a couple of years of Junior College. But after completing everything, obviously one has to come home, right?.” but he knows it can happen with some planning. So even I would love to come back home, but it all depends on the auction dynamics.

At last, I would conclude saying it will be an interesting watch that ultimately who bids for him highest and where he lands himself at! So, will it be some old franchise or someone new or out of where, we may see RCB & MI going the bids? Do comment us about your thought!!
