The Reason Behind The Success of West Indies in T-20s:

West Indies had won two T-20 World Cups in the year 2014 & 2016

Cricket is very popular in several regions of the world. The game, divided into three parts- TEST, ODI and T20, has won the hearts of people from 8 to 80. But the 20 over format is something that every fan wants to be a part of in their life. In everyone’s tight schedule, the ‘hit and run’ format which hardly goes on for more than 3-4 hours brings up an immense thrill and joy.

And whenever you discuss about the T-20s, you shouldn’t miss the name of the West Indies team. Most of their players fly all over the world to play different T-20 tournaments and franchise Cricket. But have you seen the team reaching to the top spot in ICC T20 team rankings for a long period ?? The 9th ranked team with a overall winning percentage of around 45%, find themselves behind Bangladesh. But they’re the most successful team in the T20 WC, snatching away the trophy twice. Infact they are the only team to do that in 2012 and 2016.

So, everyone may think that this team may come up against some weaker teams in the tournament like Bangladesh, Zimbabwe or others. But they have beaten IND, AUS, Eng and other strong teams for quite a number of occasions. So what’s the magic that just takes themselves in that standard ??  We can have a look at some of the special factors that have helped them to be successful in the global event of 20-20 cricket.

Natural Way of Playing The Game:

Their natural way of playing is just generating the power. They like to deal with the pressures only by hitting boundaries and big sixes and this attitude fits in the format of the game. The destructive openers and all the top order batsmen just hit the ball with sheer power from the very first delivery only to be followed by others.

The players like Crish Gayle, Darren Sammy, Johnson Charles, Evin Lewis, Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, Carlos Braithwaite can destroy any bowling attack any day in any situation. Don’t forget, Braithwaite’s four consecutive sixes against a hopeless Ben Stokes in the 2016 t-20 WC final in Eden helped them achieve an incredible victory.

Playing with Trimindous Experience:

The Caribbean players are very much experienced in this format of the game. There is no T20 league which is successful without these big players. The most successful Indian Premier League (IPL) tastes bitter without those players. They play most of the t-20 leagues (IPL, PSL, BPL,BBL, Natwest t-20, Global Cricket etc) and their players know how to deal with the format.

The likes of Gayle, Pollard, Bravo, Narine bring the league to life and become the powerhouse of the franchise Cricket. These factors help youngstars to gain a lot of experience at a very early stage of their career. That’s how they can declare themselves around the globe in the World T20 Cricket.

The Availability of Three Dimensional (3d) Players:

Besides batting and bowling, the most essential aspect of the game is fielding.  And the team in Maroon have a fabulous bunch of good fielders.

With a powerful batting house, their bowling attack with the likes of Bravo, Narine, Holder, Cottrell, Russell are a very fantastic bowling line-up for T-20s. And not to discuss about their fielding ; they are just gun fielders and save the extra vital 15-20 runs in the total. Because of the player’s issues with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), these exclusive players rarely get a chance to play as a team. Though they are able to form the best squad for the t-20 WC.

Domestic T-20 Games:

You may not find their domestic structure of the first class Cricket as strong or popular as the other countries. The Syed Mustaq Ali Trophy and shield Games are of much important for IND and AUS respectively. But, the domestic structure of the t-20 games are powerful. The Caribbean Premier League (CPL)  is the biggest tournament after IPL and BBL providing the young stars a golden opportunity to showcase their talent.

Azarri Joseph, Rankeen Cornwall, Fabien Allen, Hetmyer, Nichollas Pooran coming through the CPL , enjoy a nice combination of playing with the senior experienced guys to be a strong players in the future.

Fabulous Captaincy:

We may not give credits to the Captains in this format, but the skippers always take some great dicisons in some decisive moments. West Indies can feel themselves really lucky for having Darren Sammy as a leader. All the franchise Cricket team want him to captain their side. The two time World Cup winning skipper Played an important role in both the World Cups.

Now, the captaincy duties have been shifted to Kieron Pollard and he is doing a fair work. He may perform well and win them their third trophy if the 2020 t-20 WC is possible to be held in Australia after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some T-20 Records of West Indian Players (International + Franchiese):

  • Chris Gayle has scored the highest t-20 individual score (175*) in T20 Playing for RCB against the Pune Warriors India.
  • Gayle is also the leading run getter in T-20s.   He holds the record of the fastest century in 30 balls and is the joint record holder of fastest half century in 12 balls with Yuvraj Singh and Saheed Afridi.
  • Gayle has hit 978 sixes in T-20s so far and the most of 18 sixes in a innings.
  • Dwayne Bravo has most T20 wickets with 497 scalps in 455 games in his name.
  • Pollard has played most t-20 matches (501) with Bravo and Gayle have played 455 and 404 matches respectively.

These remain some of the key factors behind the success of West Indies in the World T20 Cricket. If they manage themselves and the young stars in a right way, then it will be a really bright future for the West Indies Cricket in T-20s. So far the signs are really good.
