The game although was impact-less in this series because of the lead of 3-0 the Indian team had before coming in the fourth game. The apple’s eyes were on a whitewash of 5-0 to showcase the dominance that the Indian team was having. Shikhar Dhawan, who was brilliant in the first part of the chain was rested and in came, Rohit Sharma, who was probably out of the side for a month with a fractured finger since the England series.
A Calm Rohit Started the innings:
The city of joy generally is so passionate about Cricket after Football; whether it’s the hottest summer day or a boring rainy day; the seats hardly can be seen to be empty. Still, because of such importance of the day specially on a weekday, most of the fans were getting back to their job after such a long break made it quite a rare calm Eden.
In those early winter seasons, captains naturally winning the toss opt to bowl to have the dew in their favor; well, Virat thought of challenging themselves by electing batting on a decent track. The start somehow drew the structure of what was coming in the next 4-hours; Rahane smashed Kulasekara for a very first ball boundary.
Both the Mumbai boys interchanged their souls between themselves; while Rohit who in normal days looks so fascinating to watch in those early overs hitting balls out of the parks, was playing dot balls which might be the fruit of being coming back into the side and Rahane being calm and composed getting settled before keeping feet on the gas was hitting boundaries for fun.
After almost 16 balls for nothing, Rohit hit his first boundary of the noon which somehow plated out that it wasn’t a normal day in the office. In between those, he had already been dropped by Thisara Perera at third man; it was time to respect the bowlers a bit.
Soon Rahane was adjusted LBW after playing a nice little cameo which Ambati Rayudu followed scoring just 8-runs after around 5-overs. Fans in the social media had already started the guessing game of how many runs Rohit would end up with on that evening and trust me none crossed 50; So, the day wasn’t an ideal for Sharma Club.
Virat’s entry threw a new life to the crowd and it also in a way helped Rohit as both of them began to play aggressive and look for boundary at-least one in every single over. Fifty came up for the Mumbai born off 72-balls. All the Indian hearts for a moment advanced in the mouth when Rohit survived thanks to a failure from Ajanta Mendis in a return catch.
Rohit in the mood; clueless SL:
India took the powerplay in the 30th over and since then the momentum shifted. All on a sudden, runs started to come so easily. Rohit Sharma hit couple of fours and a six off Kulasekara to be rewarded so much confidence. In just blink of an eye, Rohit reached his run-a-ball hundred where he scored the second fifty in just 28-deliveries. The celebration of sitting on his knees was telling that this innings was so special to him. It’s yet to finish; it has just launched!!
The overs were slowly cutting and it goes without saying that both the batters would now go berserk against the Lankan bowlers. Virat reached his half-century in between & with a four in the point region against Mathews, Rohit completed his 150, the highest individual mark at this venue. In the same over, the Indian skipper became the victim of a bizarre run-out after an innings of 66.
Meanwhile, India’s regular captain, Ms Dhoni, who was taking a nice break from the series, made a curious prediction in the social media about Rohit’s 250 if he would remain not out on that day. He knows something extra about Rohit even when he asked him to open during the 2013 Champions Trophy.
The sun was going down; the cameras getting ready, the flashlights were taking place from different parts of the stadium with the sleeping body were up on their feet as Rohit with a beautiful boundary through extra-cover reached his second ODI double hundred, first on this planet to do so. “And it’s a moment of history.”
The Mumbai boy is still hitting:
He had already beaten the God Sachin Tendulkar in hitting maximum boundaries in an ODI innings (33) and then with another six, he crossed Virender Sehwag 219, highest score in a ODI innings. He was absolutely toying with the opposition bowlers; one shot he played I have no words to describe. The ball was on the wide mark and Rohit took couple of steps in that side and hit that leg-side; I can bet no one would imagine those shots even in their sweet dream.
With another boundary, he reached 250, a score teams struggled to post as a whole team. Dhoni again proved right in taking a prediction. At last Unstoppable Rohit got out on the very last ball of the innings but till then 264 was already sitting brightly besides his name. One doesn’t require rocket science to realize that the bowlers would have a long tough day in the office in those situations.
Sri Lanka’s first job wasn’t dreaming for 404 but was to somehow going past the magical number 264; they failed and lose the game by 153-runs; 13-less they score from Rohit alone. The beautiful part was the excited of the crowd of chanting the name of Rohit when-ever he was fielding in the age of the boundary. Well, you know the man of the match; don’t you?
Funny Interview with Rohit Sharma:
“I will try my best to get to 300, but as of now I will take 264.” Rohit funnily answered in the presentations and describes how close this ground is to him “A lot of memories at Eden Garden that will remain close to me (but) this one was really special.”
Rohit on the day of Diwali before that year had celebrated his first 200 and almost on the same period another one, he brought up. It’s never easy to make a comeback with an impactful innings but Rohit shut some of his critics he was receiving of not making it big. Never doubt the class of Rohit Sharma.
Hopefully, you are not that unlucky person who missed the knock even with having a chance of witnessing it!!
