“It was like Niagara Falls last evening.”- Stephen Fleming on why CSK gave the ball to Dube in the 19th over

Stephen Fleming looked back on the waterpark and the problems of playing in the wet out-field of Brabourne stadium.

After an exciting contest, Lucknow Super Giants beat Chennai Super Kings in the 7th match of IPL 2022 and won their first match at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai.

LSG won the toss and invited CSK to bat who scored a huge 210 runs, with Uthappa’s 50, Moeen Ali’s 35 and Dube’s 49. In reply LSG’s hitter batsman Evin Lewis smashed 55 not out in just 23 balls and the openers De Cock (61) and Rahul (40) set a strong base in the run chase.

A Decision Chennai Took with one hand being tied behind:

This is the first time when Chennai have to face two consecutive defeat at the start of tournament. During the post match press conference, CSK’s head coach Stephen Fleming compaired the stadium with Niagara falls due to the amount of dew present at the ground.

He said, “If you’d looked earlier on, spinning options were taken out of play. Because it was like Niagara Falls in terms of the wetness and they [LSG] played well. So it was very hard to, one, grip the ball for a spinner and, two, to be effective”.

Fleming said that the conditions of the ground always favors the chasing team, in his words, “We thought it was about par, and that’s the nature of the conditions at the moment – they very much favour the team batting second”.

The kiwi stretched on to say, “We did well to get to 210, but we were always realistic that it was going to get harder as the night went on. So we worked very hard to stay in the game, to be honest”.

What could happen:

In other words, because the opening partnership was smacking the spinners, Chennai had to go with Dwayne Bravo and Pretorius which meant they would have an young man to bowl in the death over. If they didn’t do that, the game might have ended in the 17th over. So, it was a decision taken with their hands bound behind.

Chennai will play their next game against Punjab Kings on Sunday on the very same ground.
