TATA IPL 2022: A Little Tweak for Gill, Kuldeep, Umesh and Karthik to get their losing mojo back in new franchieses

Due to their new avatars, the IPL Franchises may now tempted to retain the players for the next year at least untill the next IPL mega auction.

The probable last big auction of the IPL (Indian Premier League) changed the fate of some players as they really showed their skill on another level with their new franchises in the 2022 season. So early to say but if they continue to show their gameplay and run of form, the retention decision from their pervious franchisees would be under scanner.

Now there is a theory that some players suit some particular franchise while some don’t which is quite hard to trust in this fully professional cricketing world. Nonetheless, there are some who are playing really well in new franchise that no one expected.

TATA IPL 2022: Third Week Top Performances: Royals top the table over second place Knight Riders as Titans are still unbeaten

Let’s take a look at few of them: –

Umesh Yadav at 2 crores went to Kolkata from Delhi:

Stats till his first five games: (2/20 against CSK, 2/16 against RCB, 4/23 against PBKS, 1/25 against MI, 1/48 against DC)

After being unsold for two seasons, the Kolkata Knight Riders management to get Umesh Yadav at his base price of 2.0 crore just to add some more Indian experience with Pat Cummins and young Shivam Mavi.

In the previous IPL, he was in Delhi Capital squad but hardly got a chance in first XI as Delhi management was inclined to play Avesh Khan with South African pace duo Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje. He got only two match to play, going wicketless, he leaked 83 runs with an economy rate of 11.85.

But in the IPL 2022, we were blessed to observe the beast mode of Umesh express. All credit goes to captain and team management as they use him with proper planning finishing his four over quota before the start of death overs.

It is clearly shown in his bowling that he wants to prove himself and eagerly waiting for the chances and now finally receiving his chance, he unleashes himself with a great spell of bowling in powerplay with his tight and swing bowling. Now he adds an outstanding inswing delivery which previously was shown only when he had reverse swing.

In the IPL 2022, his bowling figure told us the resurrection of Umesh Yadav. In five matches, he has ten wickets with an economy rate of 6.60. Till his best figure in the IPL is 4/23. Most of the wickets of him are either opener or batters who have crystallized eyes. He was awarded the player of the match twice in the three victories of Kolkata Knight Riders. Till now (12th April, 2022), he acquires the joint second spot for the Purple Cap.

Kuldeep Yadav at 2 crores went to Delhi from Kolkata:

Still till his first five games: (3/18 vs MI, 1/32 vs GT, 2/31 vs LSG, 4/35 vs KKR)

In the past years of IPL, Kuldeep Yadav was not playing up to his potential and the Kolkata Knight Riders management shattered his confidence by not playing him in the matches. In entire IPL 2021, he had only 12 overs to bowl to earn a wicket with the economy rate of 7.66. His bowling average was very poor 92.00.

In this mega auction of IPL, Delhi Capitals bought Kuldeep Yadav for 2.00 crore.

After getting the confidence from captain, Rishabh Pant and team management, Kuldeep Yadav finally shows his class and talent in this new version of IPL. He changes his arm speed during run up and clearly improved the zip of the ball. He now becomes faster in the air and batter gets less time to play a shot against him.

Kuldeep is the leader of spin attack of Delhi Capitals in this season almost erasing the memories of Ashwin. He takes ten wickets in four matches with an economy rate of 7.40 at a remarkable average of only 11.60. His best bowling figure is 4/35 in a very crucial stage of match against his ex-franchise Kolkata Knight Riders and the aggression after every wicket shows how much he wants to prove himself. He also was awarded the player of the match tittle for two times DC won in four matches.

Dinesh Karthik at 5.50 crores went to Bangalore from Kolkata:

Stats in his first four games: [32*(14) against PBKS, 14*(7) against KKR, 44*(23) against RR, 7*(2) against MI]

The former wicket-keeper captain of KKR, Dinesh Karthik is still unbeaten in the Tata IPL 2022 in the jersey of Royal Challengers Bangalore. He is enjoying the role of the finisher and he does so with such confidence and wide range of modern cricketing shots.

In the previous IPLs, he stepped down from captaincy of KKR in the middle of the season and gave it to World cup winning captain, Eoin Morgan. He scored 233 runs in 15 innings with the strike rate of 131.17 in 17 matches. Clearly the strike rate was not up to the mark.

In the auction, RCB needs a finisher and Indian wicket keeper in which reason, they went aggressively for DK and caught him for 5.50 crore. At this amount many cricket pundits doubted him but he proves everyone wrong by his bat. In the four matches he played with RCB, he scored 97 runs and nobody could get him out. At the position, he batted with the most important thing i.e., strike rate and match finishing, He played with a massive strike rate of 210.87. For this kind of batting, RCB doesn’t miss the ‘Mr 360 degree’ Ad de Villiers and the ‘Big Show’ Glenn Maxwell for the First four matches.

Shubman Gill at 8 crores went to Gujrat from Kolkata:

Stats in his first four games: [0(3) against LSG, 84(46) against DC, 96(59) against PBKS 9(7) against SRH]

After a debatable call by Kolkata Knight Riders management not to retain Shubman Gill, the Under-19 lad was drafted by new IPL team Gujrat Titans before the Mega Auction. After the first match duck, Shubman Gill showed his consistency and temperament by scoring two big runs while opening with GT. His match winning two knocks proved his worth as an opener.

With KKR, Gill was continuously criticised for his poor strike rate as an opener. He played 17 matches in the previous IPL and makes 478 runs with a strike rate of 118.90 at a batting average was 28.11.

With Gujrat, this season Gill 2.0 came with splendid stroke making, cricketing shots and clean hitting. In four matches he scored 189 runs with the strike rate of 180.00. All credit goes to the intent. He changed his batting style such that he is trying to avoid dot balls as much as possible. The two big innings will boost up his confidence and will help the franchise to do well in the IPL.

Before the matches of the IPL start, Gujrat was considered one of the weakest contenders but kudos to their players specially Shubman Gill to score runs upfront and making the franchise win three out of four matches. Shubman Gill was standing fourth for orange cap race till 12th April.

What’s to follow for the players:

In the game of cricket, it has been like a cliché of job of starting the tournament on a high but losing the fuel on a long two month competion which meant that the players need to continue their form to be on the top side. Everyone remembers the way you start or the mode you end; the middle is just the boring nap time for few.
