Eoin Morgan : An Irish Pillar Behind The English Cricket Transformation

Coming from Ireland, Eoin Morgan was handed the captaincy duties when England were struggling after the 2015 World Cup game but he with his team had led England to become the 2019 World Cup winners.

“The Bangladesh Tigers have knocked the England Lions out of the World Cup.”

The Game That Stunned England Cricket:

9th March, 2015 was one of the toughest days in England Cricket and for their fans back home. It hadn’t been a fair World Cup campaign for the Three Lions but losing in the hands of Bangladesh in the darks of Adelaide just made all the wheels of the car free. The contrasting emotion of Jimmy Anderson after getting out to a nailing Rubel yorker and all the opponent players including their spectators on the stands drew the image of the last eight hours.

In the England dressing room, a newly appointed captain Eoin Morgan felt the devastating destruction of his troops as they failed to cross not the easiest but certainly achievable target of 275 against 9th Ranked Bangladesh side. It wasn’t a fruitful preparation for the them as their premiere bowler Stuart Broad believed that England would have to have ‘A absolute stinker’ not to qualify at least for the quarter-finals; “I hope those words don’t come back to haunt me.” I guess it was not only him but hardly one calculated their destiny.

The Problem of England in White Ball Cricket:

The morning in London caught dark clouds of the World Cup exit and the British papers including the social media were raising questions over Eoin’s captaincy and Cricket future after the horrify last couple of months. One of the biggest reasons for their fall was mostly because of their approach. “In 2015, while the rest of the World was moving on a highway, England was moving on a rickshaw.” Presents the Voice of Cricket, Harsha Bhogle. And some of their stats are painting quite a bright picture of that. From the start of 2014 to the end of the 2015 WC, their batting average (27.60) & strike rate (83.10) were just better than Pakistan and Bangladesh. They were taking almost 2-overs to cross the boundary line.

One of the biggest set-backs that you generally face in those tough times is that all on a sudden you began to cut away all the old branches to plant new baby trees. But the way the administration had handled the time was exceptional. Andrew Strauss, the director of ECB Cricket, could have panicked after the rubbish show and could run to a different route but he didn’t. They kept Morgan as the leader and appointed Trevor Bayliss just add some freshness in the whole system.

How England Changed Their Luck:

There had been some old time where you didn’t take the 50-over cricket seriously placing it as their second-choice format. England were still riding on that path as Ex-captain Naseer Hussain had mentioned that the selectors were still rewarding the one-day caps on their test performances. “Biggest change for England was in its selection.” He preferred in an interview of Cricbuzz in conversation. “Last 2015 World Cup, England were still selecting people on their Test Performances.” Some of their biggest future stars like Bairstow, Roy, Hales and others were kept waiting for some of the old fellows like Cook, Balance or James Taylor. “Players were there, but finally England realized that white-ball Cricket is different.”

Their first assignment after the destroy was their series against New Zealand. After a tough victory in the longer format of the game, they were up against Bredon McCullum led World-Cup runners up side. It seemed like all the players are making their debut; they all were new in the international circuit. And to make it a nightmare for Morgan & Bayliss, England lost Jason Roy in the very first ball of the match. “This game can chew you up and split you out.” Revealed Morgan in ESPN UK Cricket show. They could have disclosed their eyes from their aim of showing intent without any fear; but they didn’t and that was the most impressive one. It’s always tough to plate new methods and tactics when your side isn’t doing well.

Improvements are observed Right-now:

The most comfortable hands the players received on their shoulders were the belief that all the players had no scare of getting dropped from the side even if they failed in a series. In that first match, England posted 408 in 50-overs thanks to Root and Butler’s speedy 100s. All the players till number 10 who had played more than 20 balls, were striking at a rate of over 100. And that wasn’t a leap-year innings, England crossed the 350-run mark in most of the games in the series. Since 2015, Morgan and his troops had secured the 400-mark four times against different teams with South Africa being the only other to cross it in Wankhede stadium.

On August 30, 2016 England just send a warning to all the teams that they were having a strong eye on the 2019 home soil World cup when they scored 444 in 50-overs because of some amazing hitting by Alex Hales, Morgan himself and Jos Butler. If that wasn’t enough for paging a statement then their 481 against arch-rivals Australia, 2-years later in the same ground with Jonny Bairstow charging the bowlers this time replacing Jos, surely gave birth of fear in everyone’s mind. 21-sixes at a different place of the ground just die all the dreams of the young-stars to become bowlers. “It was not only exciting for people to watch; it was great fun to play in as well.” The words of Eoin Morgan in the same show mentioned before.

They had a bit of stunts during the World cup 2019 losing back-to-back but the best thing about Morgan’s captaincy was the belief he shows on his boys. On that 14th July afternoon, the World-Cup denied to arrive in Kiwi’s camp really because of some old Cricketing rules, but the way the England team and their players, support staffs have performed, they thoroughly deserved the biggest glory.

England Erased the Shock Winning 2019 WC:

“England have won the World Cup by the barest of margin.” When you see the rush of the players, the madness in the Lord’s balcony, the full crowd streets, you understand what does it mean to them; it’s not only about winning the Cup, it’s getting back the pride back. “I feel extremely fortunate to be part of the huge cycle in English Cricket.”

As a captain, you have to be crystal clear about his tactics and that’s what makes Morgan a great captain. In the first ODI against India in Pune, when his side lost 8-wickets in just 82 and eventually gifted it to the opposition, he still doesn’t doubt in his lads. “Sometimes, it didn’t work but for us it’s better to lose like that than losing by 10-20runs.” That figures out the right message that he is sending to the English dressing room. “In a presentation or press conference, he never doubts any of the moves or the directions that his team is going in, that’s why he is successful, his team is successful.” English Ex-captain Naseer Hussain spells out in a nutshell.

It’s never easy coming from another country and besides keeping yourself in the runs, led a side from the bottom to the top. Eoin Morgan is absolutely a strong pillar behind England’s transformation. From sitting lonely in the Adelaide dressing room to be covered with crowd in the Lord’s balcony, Redemption is truly alive. He will surely eye for another cherry on the cake in 2023 in India.
